Community Café Opens at Shanklin Station to Support Frontline Heroes

Passengers travelling through Shanklin station can now enjoy a coffee for a cause, following the opening of Buffers Café, a new community-focused venture operated by Blue Lights on Wight CIC from the station's former café premises within the booking hall.
The café represents the first phase of an ambitious project by the Isle of Wight based Community Interest Company, which was established to support current and former members of the emergency services and other frontline organisations who are living with mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Founded by former emergency services personnel, Blue Lights on Wight was created to provide practical support, advocacy and access to care for those who have dedicated their lives to serving others.
Buffers Café has been transformed through the hard work and dedication of volunteers, breathing new life into the former station refreshment kiosk and creating an inviting space for passengers, visitors and local residents. Importantly, all proceeds generated by the café will be reinvested directly into the CIC's charitable activities, helping to fund support services for former police officers, firefighters, paramedics, prison officers, coastguards, lifeboat crews, search and rescue personnel and other frontline workers.
Blue Lights on Wight was formed in response to growing awareness of the mental health challenges experienced by frontline workers. The organisation highlights research indicating that significant numbers of police officers and ambulance staff exhibit symptoms associated with PTSD and complex PTSD, while other emergency service professions face similar challenges that can often go unrecognised.
The opening of Buffers Café marks only the beginning of the group's vision for Shanklin station. Subject to the necessary approvals and consents, Blue Lights on Wight hopes to undertake a second phase of the project by renovating the station's former Red Star parcels office. The longer-term aspiration is to create dedicated therapy and wellbeing rooms, providing a safe and supportive environment where frontline personnel can access assistance and counselling services close to home.
The initiative is another example of how railway stations can play an important role in supporting the communities they serve, bringing together passengers, volunteers and local organisations to create lasting social value while enhancing the station environment. The refurbishment has transformed a previously vacant space into a vibrant community asset that will provide benefits far beyond its role as a café.
Alan Mackay, Founder and Chairman of Blue Lights on Wight CIC:
"Buffers Café is far more than a place to buy a cup of coffee. Every purchase made here will help us support former and serving frontline personnel who may be struggling with the lasting impact of the work they carried out in service of the public. We are incredibly grateful for the support we have received in bringing this project to life and see the café as the first step towards creating dedicated therapy and wellbeing facilities at Shanklin station. Our aim is simple: to ensure that those who spent their careers helping others know that support is available when they need it most."
